Rob's potting grew from a desire to add something warm and uplifting to the cold, dark winters he spent in Yellowknife from 1990 to 2004. The Yellowknife Guild of Arts & Crafts, a vibrant organization of amazing potters and artists, welcomed Rob to their membership in 1997 and his passion for working with clay took off! Moving to Saskatoon in 2004, Rob joined the Saskatoon Potters Guild and the opportunity for learning new techniques and glazes presented itself through Judy Tryon of JT Pottery. Judy challenged Rob to try new things, telling him, "… you know how to throw a bowl, so try something different!" Rob took Judy's advice and three of his pieces were chosen for a juried exhibit sponsored by the Saskatchewan Arts Council. A move to Castlegar in 2011 (for better winters, among other things!) gave Rob the opportunity to set up his own studio. He is pleased to be carrying on a pottery tradition in the house formerly owned by the late Mrs. Couch, a well-known Castlegar teacher, potter and artist. The studio gets its name from a large Fiddle Tree (Tulip Tree) in the back garden.
