Thrums Logic: Art and Design

I love to collect new and used beads, art glass, shell, and semi-precious stones from all over the world for my jewellery creations. Inspiration comes from ethnic jewellery of other cultures as well as from my own heritage - Celtic and eastern European. I'm intrigued with ancient Sumerian jewellery, and the amazing technical artistry. I choose the colours for most pieces that I make, in the daylight, informed by the light and reflections of the natural landscape of my home on the Kootenay River. I'm drawn to jewellery as an artform because of the sparkle and play of light on the materials.

I'm now deeply engaged in metal arts which I love because of the strength and beauty of the materials. I am now exploring ways in which I can join elements of beadwork which adds colour, and texture, to silver bodies to create jewellery that is both substantive and colourful. The design challenge is to incorporate the elements in such a way that they form a complementary and seamless union.

Currently I have found resonance with the Japanese esthetic of wabi-sabi, centered on the acceptance of transience – nothing is perfect, nothing lasts and nothing is permanent. At the same time I realize that I'm conflicted- although inspired by the fluid and ever changing forms in nature, I'm driven to create objects in precious metals, beads, gems, and shells, with a desire that they will last and be appreciated for more than a single season.
