USCC Kootenay Men's Group

The Kootenay Men's Group is a non-profit group of USCC volunteers and friends interested in creative woodworking projects and community service. In 1999, the group constructed the USCC Interpretive and Training Centre on the grounds of the Brilliant Cultural Centre and currently share the facility with the ladies' Cultural Interpretive Society. In 2013, the KMG celebrated 25 years since its formation in 1988.

The group's activities are largely funded by the sale of hand-crafted wooden products, using locally purchased and donated lumber. In 1990 the KMG began building wooden pine caskets, over 400 of which have now been sold to both Doukhobors and non-Doukhobors in the Kootenay and Boundary area. Although this is their main focus, they also make an assortment of ornamental and practical items for donations or gifts. They aspire to maintain traditional Doukhobor woodworking motifs, skills and techniques in their work, and offer classes or workshops in this craft to encourage Doukhobor youth to appreciate and learn about this aspect of their culture.

One of their important objectives is the support of local families who are faced with tragic or challenging circumstances. They also strive to provide assistance for both internal USCC needs, as well as other non-profit initiatives within the general community.

The Kootenay Men's Group welcome new members and gratefully accept donations in the form of woodworking equipment, supplies, or financial assistance.

Please contact the USCC Kootenay Men’s Group for more information about their pine-wood caskets, or other specific information about the group.
